Sauna raft Babs

IMG_9958.HEIC

Engø’s Sauna Raft is named after Babs.

Babs was the nickname of the British Dorothy Grace Babington, who first visited the estate in 1935. She fell in love with both the place and with Frithjof Phil, who was running the estate at the time together with his sister Daisy. Frithjof and Babs married the following year, and with Babs came an intriguing, strong, and distinctive personality to Engø.

AUFGUSS SAUNA RITUAL

An Aufguss experience can be a refreshing and intense way to enjoy the sauna. Aufguss is an aromatherapeutic sauna ritual originating from Germany. During an Aufguss ceremony, a sauna master (Aufgussmeister) pours water infused with essential oils over hot stones in the sauna. The sauna master then uses a towel or fan to circulate the hot, humid air throughout the room, creating an intense heat experience.

The distribution of hot steam enhances the sensation of heat in the sauna, while the essential oils provide either a calming or invigorating effect. The rituals often include music and storytelling for a fully immersive sensory experience, offering wellness benefits such as improved circulation, detoxification, and deep relaxation.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Please check in at reception upon arrival to receive access and information about Babs. The sauna is located at the bottom of Grimestad Bay, just a short walk down from Låven.

Please, wear swimwear when visiting the sauna raft. Everyone must shower before entering the sauna. We recommend removing any jewelry, as it may become hot and uncomfortable against the skin.

Towels, a shower, and a minibar are available on the sauna raft. There are restroom and changing facilities nearby. With direct access to the sea, you can enjoy a refreshing dip – which also offers excellent health benefits.
